When the building’s 4,000 square foot developer-designed lobby was flooded during Hurricane Sandy, building residents saw an opportunity to reimagine the common lobby and 1st floor spaces. Rexrode Chirigos Architects’ response to the challenge was a renovation that creates gracious shared space for two residential towers, draws natural light deep into interior areas, and opens up views towards the street. The building’s Tribeca location inspired a mix of references to the once-industrial neighborhood. A material palate of walnut paneling, steel, glass, and Venetian plaster threads through reception desks, seating areas, mailrooms, alcoves, and corridors. Custom light fixtures and restored vintage and new furnishings provide a link to the warmth and richness of the residences above. New plantings, indoors and out, further emphasize the relationship between the building and the neighborhood beyond.
